Project Description
Energiekontor is a wind farm developer with a strong track record of developing over 70 wind farms across Europe. The proposed Monkwith wind farm consists of three turbines with a total combined generating capacity of between 6 and 7.5MW. It is estimated that the wind farm would generate between 14.4 million and 18 million kWh of electricity per year*, which is enough energy to power the equivalent of between between 3,124 and 3,928 homes. The calculations we have used are detailed on the BWEA website. The wind turbines would be up to 111m high to the tip of the blade with a hub height of 70m and would have a rotor diameter of up to 82m. The wind farm would provide a clean alternative source of power that would help to reduce our dependence on increasingly scarce imported fossil fuels. It is estimated that the energy produced by the wind farm would mean that an equivalent of between 6,215 and 7,769 tonnes of CO2 could be saved each year* from the burning of fossil fuels in conventional coal and gas power stations.
The site is located within the East Riding of Yorkshire between the hamlets of Tunstall and Hilston, and is approximately 6.5 kilometres North West of Withernsea. The map illustrates the location of the site.
In 2007 a planning application was submitted for the construction of seven wind turbines on this site that would have been 121m to tip. The current proposal is a significantly scaled back version of the previous proposal and as a result the effects of the development will also be dramatically reduced.
It is anticipated that a planning application for the current proposal will be submitted in the first half of 2009. This web site contains the plans and documents that are relevant to the proposal and will be regularly updated. Please go to the Tell Us Your Thoughts pages explains the consultation exercise with the Questionnaire enabling you to provide your views and once a planning application has been submitted the Support Us page will enable you rot write a letter to the Council supporting the planning application. You can also use the Keep Informed facility to receive updates on the progress of the proposals, our details are also provided so that you are able to provide your comments on the proposals.

* The estimates relating to power output show the range of estimated output from a 6MW and a 7.5MW wind farm with a capacity factor of 27.5% (the UK average.) A figure of 4,600 kWh was used for the average household electricity consumption in East Riding of Yorkshire (BERR Publication URN: 08/487c - Regional and Local Authority Electricity Consumption Statistics 2005, 2006, 2007.) It is difficult to predict exactly what volume of CO2 emissions the wind farm will prevent as the amount of CO2 generated by conventional sources varies from year to year; the figure for CO2 savings depends on which source of electricity generation the wind power generating capacity is displacing at any given time during the year. In calculating the emissions savings the government’s long term marginal plant figure of 430 grammes of CO2 per kWh is used to reflect the combined CO2 displacement factors of both gas-fired and coal-fired generation. It should be noted that future changes in the power generating mix and fuel costs in the UK means this figure may change over time.
